I completed my secondary education on the 20th of September 2020, with the ultimate goal of pursuing a career in nursing. During my final year in secondary school, I took the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and selected Nursing as my preferred course at the University of Ilorin. Unfortunately, my scores were not high enough to gain admission to the university. Undeterred, I attempted the UTME once more the following year but failed again, primarily due to inadequate preparation.
Although my scores were sufficient to gain admission into a polytechnic, I was determined to attend a university. Consequently, I took a gap year to focus on acquiring a new skill - shoe making - which I had been interested in since my secondary school days. During this period, I also acquired computing skills at my Big Mummy's shop. However, I resumed preparation for another UTME the following year and stopped attending the shoe making workshop.
During this period, I lived with my Aunties, who were older, more experienced, and had graduated from tertiary institutions. They consistently asked me about my career aspirations and encouraged me to articulate my thoughts and goals. At first, I found it difficult to express myself, but their persistence paid off, and I finally decided to pursue a career in nursing.
After three attempts, I was elated to pass the UTME and gained admission to the Federal Polytechnic in Ilaro, where I am currently studying Nutrition and Dietetics. Although my Aunties encouraged me to select this course, I have found it to be an excellent fit for my interests and abilities, and I am enjoying my studies. I have also had the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of people and reside in the school's hostel, something I had not planned on doing initially.
On the 29th of March 2023, we held our Matriculation Ceremony, which was a success, and I look forward to the rest of my academic journey.
